We engage with partners such as employees, NGOs and suppliers to proactively manage our impact on the environment.
Our ongoing project with PEARL (Protecting East African Resources and Livelihood) and WWF UK is helping to tackle threats to biodiversity, natural resources and local livelihoods in eastern Africa by encouraging sustainable fisheries, sustainable charcoal production, climate change adaptation and microfinance. or to find out more about these projects.
We’re also supporting SolarAid in a four-year partnership aimed at combating poverty and climate change by helping disadvantaged communities in Kenya replace kerosene lighting with clean and affordable solar energy.
We know that the way our employees behave at work can make a crucial difference to our environmental performance. We run many internal campaigns to publicise our own environmental programme and raise awareness about climate change. For example, in 2011, this included ‘Water Awareness’ and ‘Switch It Off’ campaigns in UK Retail and Business Banking.
The Switch It Off campaign involved a pilot programme to switch off lights and electrical devices which we ran in branches in north west London, and led to a 5% saving in energy costs. We will roll out the same campaign across the whole UK branch network in 2012. We also offer training on environmental matters to our colleagues and any contractors working specifically in this area. We will develop a new environmental training framework in 2012.
Our managers and employees often speak at conferences and events on environmental issues, as a way of raising awareness, sharing best practice and influencing the wider debate. During 2011, we attended the Durban Climate Change Conference, the South East Asia Corporate Leaders Initiative on Climate Change and various Confederation of British Industry Climate Change events.
