UN Millennium Development Goals

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have been set by the UN and relate to the world’s main development challenges. The objective is to achieve them by 2015, and we are actively playing a role in this.

While access to finance is not an explicit MDG, the goals do support human rights, by empowering people to make their own choices about education, health and business development. Barclays has a major presence in Africa and contributes to development there as a local bank. See Increasing access to finance for more information on our work in this area.

We also support the achievement of individual MDGs through our community investment projects, as outlined below. There is more on this in Supporting our communities. Our Banking on Change microfinance project is accredited as a UN Business Call to Action Project. This is an international initiative which supports the achievement of the MDGs.
